MEDICAL AIR EVACUATION TRANSPORT UNIT (1 MAETU)
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII

In early 1944 fifteen nurses from the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service (RAAFNS) were recruited into the newly formed No. 1 Medical Air Evacuation Transport Unit (1 MAETU). Sister Beryl Chandler from Longreach, Queensland joined the RAAFNS in May 1942. Sister Chandler was one of the first nurses to join No. 1 MAETU.
No. 1 MAETU was given the nickname "Meet you".
The 15 nurses were trained in:-
The flight teams of No. 1 MAETU became known as "The Flying Angels". A flight team comprised a sister and an orderly would accompany as many as 18 stretcher cases on board C-47 Dakotas from forward combat areas to RAAF base hospitals in Australia. Approximately 8,000 patients were evacuated in its first year of operation.
