CRASH OF A P-40E KITTYHAWK
AT FORT LYTTON,
BRISBANE, QLD
ON 24 JANUARY 1942

P-40 Kittyhawk

 

On 24 January 1942, 2nd Lt. Jack R. Peres belly landed his P-40E Kittyhawk #41-5365 #85, at Fort Lytton in Brisbane, resulting in his aircraft suffering undercarriage, wing tip, mainplane, aileron, flaps and airscrew damage. 2nd Lt. Perese had earlier taken off from Amberley airfield west of Ipswich on a test flight following assembly at Amberley. There was minimum damage to #85. This aircraft was repaired and was again crashed at Canberra by Lt Marks on the 28 February 1942 when it was renumbered #61 White with the 8th Pursuit Squadron.

2nd Lt Jack Peres was later shot down over Darwin in P-40E-CU 41-5456 #36 during the first Japanese bombing raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942.
