Beaufort A9-88 was originally delivered to the RAAF in July 1942. It was involved in another earlier accident 5 miles north west of Bairnsdale on 27 August 1942 when it collided in mid-air with Beaufort A9-85.

It was converted to components after the crash at Yanakie.
