The US Navy Landing Force Equipment Depot, Seventh Amphibious Force, was attached to the Amphibious Training Centre at Gan Gan established by the US Army near Port Stephens in New South Wales during WWII. The Royal Australian Navy's HMAS Assault was also co-located with this US Army Amphibious Training Centre

On 24 May 1943, the Landing Force Equipment Depot was called on to assist by HMAS Assault after RAAF Catalina, A24-384, piloted by Flight Lieutenant H.B. Higgins struck an unusual wave at Port Stephens and crashed while practicing circuits and landings on the water at Port Stephens on 24 May 1943. Seven crew members died in this tragic accident.
