The Squadron was constituted as the 70th Troop Carrier Squadron on 22 January 1943 and activated and attached to the 433rd Troop Carrier Group on 9 February 1943.

The 70th Troop Carrier Squadron was posted to the following locations during WWII:-

9 Jun 1943 Laurinburg-Maxton AAB, NC
1-13 Aug 1943 Baer Field, Ind

21 Sep 1943 Port Moresby, NG
10 Oct 1943 Nadzab, NG
3 Jul 1944 Hollandia, NG
Oct 1944 Biak
28 Feb 1945 Dulag, Leyte
12 Apr 1945 Tanauan, Leyte
28 Jun 1945 Clark Field, Luzon

Operated C-47s 1943 to 1945, and C-46s 1944-1945.

 

Douglas C-47A-35-DL (Dakota) #42-23919
crash landed at Cooktown on 17 September 1943

 

On 6 March 1944, a USAAF C-47A-70-DL Douglas Dakota
#42-100723 (#338) of 70th TCS
crashed near Laguna, NSW
