GORDON
JAMES MCCARTNEY
TELEGRAPHIST WITH SIA
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
Gordon James McCartney (130578) was recruited at No 2 Recruiting Depot on 2 February 1943 as a Trainee Telegraphist with the RAAF. Gordon then attended the Signal School at Point Cook from 13 March 1943. He attended No 88 Telegraphists Course from 4 October 1943 until 28 October 1943 and became a Telegraphist on 29 October 1943.
He was then attached to 209 Radar Station at Benowa on the Gold Coast (then called the South Coast) from 8 November 1943 and then to 49 Radar Station at Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island from 6 January 1944. LAC Gordon McCartney was then attached to RAAF Command on 3 May 1944 which must have been the time when he was attached to Secret Intelligence Australia SIA. He may have spent time at the SIA Training Camp and Wireless Station at Newman House at Caboolture.
His family believe he received a leg wound and caught malaria as a result of his service and at some stage was in the Cocos Islands but they are uncertain if this is correct.
He was later attached to AFHQ (D Intel) on 5 December 1945 and finally to 2 Personnel Depot for discharge on 5 March 1946. He was discharged from the RAAF on 9 April 1946 and received 50 days pay in lieu of leave.
