CRASH OF A BOOMERANG
AT GUILDFORD, WA
ON 1 JANUARY 1944
![]()

Boomerang A46-18 of 85 Squadron RAAF, piloted by acting Sgt. Dudley Barton Adams (418043), swerved off the runway to the left after landing at Guildford on 1 January 1944. The pilot applied full right rudder and a burst of the engine, but the aircraft continued swerving and finally tore through the scrub, coming to rest on its belly in thick scrub. The aircraft received moderate damage and the pilot was not injured. The aircraft was sent to 4 Aircraft Depot, 4 AD, for conversion.
The accident report states that the pilot was actually ranked as a Leading Aircraftman. His rank was reduced to LAC after a court martial some months before, for low flying Boomerang A46-22 at Cunderdin (the files are digitised at NAA). According to his service record he was appointed acting Sergeant on 1 January 1944 (the date of the crash) and the 85 Squadron Operations Record Book lists him as a Sergeant at the time of the incident.
