COLLISION OF TWO P-40 KITTYHAWKS
NEAR ONSLOW, WA
ON 20 APRIL 1943

On 20 April 1943, P-40E Kittyhawks A29-163 and A29-160 (#41-24823) of 76 Squadron RAAF, collided near Onslow in Western Australia. Kittyhawk A29-163 collided with A29-160 after completing a shoot-up of the ack-ack positions during a gunnery and ack-ack co-operation exercise.

Twenty three year old Flying Officer Peter Todd Read (407251), the pilot of A29-163 was killed in this accident. He was buried in Plot A, Row A, Grave No. 1 at Geraldton War Cemetery. The aircraft was destroyed in the ensuing fire.

Pilot Officer Kenneth William Baxter (408687) force landed Kittyhawk A29-160 in a swamp and escaped injury. The aircraft was salvaged  by a Detachment of 17 Repair and Salvage Unit (17 RSU) and converted to components.
