AVRO ANSON HIT WIND SOCK
SUPPORT
AT LOWOOD AIRFIELD, QLD
ON 14 NOVEMBER 1943
![]()
During the later stages of an approach to land at night at Lowood Airfield on 14 November 1943 after an anti-submarine patrol, Avro Anson AX-619 of 71 Squadron RAAF based at Lowood, approached low on the flare path and struck the top of the wind sock pole with the undersurface of the fuselage. The wind sock was on the western boundary of the airfield well short of the flare path, but was unlit, as it was not considered an obstruction.
The crew were as follows:-
F/Sgt Anthony Robert Stafford (413911) - Pilot
P/O Colin McCallum (425956) - Navigator "B"
Sgt. Ian McDonald Templeton (418710) - W.A.G.
The pilot, F/Sgt Anthony Robert Stafford (413911), and his crew had only just returned to their base at Lowood two days earlier after a forced landing of Avro Anson DG-900 on Fraser Island on 7 November 1943. This was their first flight since that previous forced landing on Fraser Island.
