CRASH OF AN UNKNOWN AIRCRAFT
POSSIBLY IN THE BRISBANE AREA
ON 20 OCTOBER 1943

2nd Lt. Willis F. Schmidt (0-798683), a Test Pilot with the 44th Depot Repair Squadron, 81st Air Depot Group, based at Eagle Farm Airfield in Brisbane, Queensland was killed in the crash of an unknown aircraft, on 20 October 1943, possibly in the Brisbane area in south east Queensland.
Can anyone please confirm the aircraft involved and the location of the crash.

Chicago Tribune 20 Nov 1943 Abstract Lt. Willis F Schmidt, formerly of 7220 Sangamon St., was killed in an air crash in the Southwest Pacific on the third anniversary of his enlistment in the army, his fiancée, Miss Albetine B. Teninga was advised yesterday. He was a graduate of Parker high school. He is survived by his parents Otto and Florence, nee Boss, three sisters, Mariette, Mildred and Patricia, two brothers, Staff Sgt. Arthur Schmidt, U.S.A.A.F., and Donald. |
