CRASH OF A DOUGLAS A-24-DE
DAUNTLESS
AT SOUTHPORT, QLD
ON 29 JANUARY 1942
Douglas A-24-DE Dauntless #41-15809, piloted by 2nd Lt. Alverson of the 91st Bomb Squadron, 27th Fighter Group, crash landed at Southport, in south east Queensland on about 29 January 1942 after engine trouble and a subsequent fire. The remains of the aircraft were taken to Archerfield Airfield near Brisbane for salvage. The aircraft was officially condemned on 7 November 1942.
Robert Blaikie and his brother were on the beach when a Douglas Dauntless flew past very low heading south. Robert believes it clipped the top of a wave and crash landed on to the beach. Robert and his brother ran up the beach towards Broadbeach where they saw the wreckage of the Dauntless. The pilot had hit his face on the instrument panel and was receiving treatment at a nearby house by residents.
