CRASH OF A P-400
10 MILES NORTH EAST
OF CHARTERS TOWERS AIRFIELD

On 14 August 1942, USAAF Bell P-400, BW144 (c/n 14-336), piloted by 2nd Lt. Eugene A. Eleltnaki, crashed 10 miles north east of Charters Towers airfield.
This particular Bell P-400 was earmarked and boxed to be sent to Australia from the USA as part of Project "X" on 25 January 1942 under Defence Aid Contract DA-42-4663. It was shipped to Australia on 22 February 1942. It was assembled and accepted into USAAF service in Australia on 14 May 1942. It was removed from the USAAF register on 14 August 1942.
