CRASH OF A P-400

On 8 January 1943, USAAF Bell P-400, AH738 (c/n 14-169), piloted by 2nd Lt. E.B. Maxwell crashed 30 miles north west of Charters Towers airfield after an engine failure.
This particular Bell P-400 was earmarked and boxed to be sent to Australia from the USA as part of Project "X" on 11 February 1942 under Defence Aid Contract DA-42-4663. It was shipped to Australia on 5 March 1942. It was assembled and accepted into USAAF service in Australia on 14 May 1942. It was removed from the USAAF register on 8 January 1943.
