ACCIDENT INVOLVING A ROYAL NAVY SEAFIRE
IN THE MT. DRUITT AREA, NSW
ON 3 JULY 1945

On 3 July 1945, Royal Navy Seafire, S139, was being flown by Pilot Officer Daniels on a cross country flight from the Royal Navy base at Schofields. Not long after take-off, the controls failed to respond and Daniels decided to bale out. When he released the canopy of the Seafire, it struck him on the head rendering him unconscious. When he came to, he found that the aircraft was still flying over the Mount Druitt airfield at the time. He successfully landed the Seafire. A damaged aileron was repaired by 2 Salvage and Repair Unit RAAF on the same day. P/O Daniels was returned to Schofields in the Norseman aircraft which had been used to search for him after radio contact was lost.
