DH-94 Moth Minor
At about 0830 hours on 12 January 1941, RAAF DH-94 Moth Minor A21-32 (Airframe No. 94097) of 22 Squadron RAAF made a forced landing near Falls Bridge, Yarramundi in New South Wales about 8 miles from Richmond Airfield. The aircraft was taking part in an Army Co-operation exercise when it struck high voltage and telegraph wires tearing off its rudder whilst making a surprise low flying attack on Army troops.
The pilot made a forced landing about half a mile away in a corn field and tore off a wing and damaged the propeller. The four foot high corn cushioned the impact of the aircraft. Earlier the aircraft had dropped four flour bombs on the troops who were practicing "cover taking" during air raids. The troops on the ground rushed to the crashed aircraft to render assistance to the crew.
The crew comprised:-
Pilot Officer John Walter Wedgewood Piper (250828)
Flight Lieutenant Lloyd George Moffatt
Neither of the crew were injured. The aircraft was badly damaged.
The aircraft was received by the RAAF on 29 March 1940 and was Struck off Charge on 4 February 1941.
