CRASH OF A WIRRAWAY
5 MILES SOUTH WEST OF BUNGENDORE, NSW
ON 27 FEBRUARY 1942

Wirraway A20-462 crashed and caught fire about 5 miles south-west of Bungendore in NSW at 1050 hours E.A.S.T. on Friday 27 February 1942 and killed 24 year old Pilot Officer Frederick William Powell (405529) of the RAAF School of Army Co-operation in Canberra and 25 year old Captain William John McCutcheon of the 51st Australian Infantry Battalion AIF, during a map reading exercise. The probable cause for the accident was listed as "Obscure" in the "Preliminary Report (External) of Flying Accident or Forced Landing" report.
