CRASH OF A KITTYHAWK
AT PARKES AIRFIELD, NSW
ON 21 AUGUST 1945

On 21 August 1945, P-40M-10 Kittyhawk, A29-349 (#43-5777) of 8 OTU RAAF, crashed about 50 metres from the end of the Parkes airfield after an engine failure on take off, hit a tree and burnt, killing the pilot Flight Lieutenant Leonard Keith Harris (403736). The aircraft had been received by 8 OTU in the previous month.
Flight Lieutenant Leonard Keith Harris (403736) was buried in Parkes Cemetery.
This aircraft had been delivered in April 1943 and was involved in an earlier landing accident at Momote airfield in the Admiralty Islands on 16 March 1944 while with 76 Squadron where pilot F/Sgt G Hipgrave was unhurt.
