CRASH OF A C-60A LODESTAR
ON NORFOLK ISLAND
ON 26 JUNE 1944

On 26 June 1944, the "brakes failed" on Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Lodestar C60A, #3515. The Pilot, C.B. Cornish, was taxying the aircraft when the hydraulics failed and it struck a low bank at the edge of the runway. The aircraft needed new main plane. 

The Lodestar appears to have been written off (need to check file 25/2/1636 re writing off). Recommendation that tail wheel be locked when taxying in a straight line as that would save wear on brakes and juggling engines to keep straight. But this had not been appreciated as the first plane with a lockable tail wheel was the Hudson Mark V.
