WW2 BUNKERS IN
QUEENS PARK, TOWNSVILLE

Ray Smith, Manager of Donnington Airport, 41 kms west of Townsville, said in an article in "The Independent News" on Wednesday 9 August 1995, that he could remember bunkers located under the Sports Reserve in Townsville. I rang Ray Smith on 21 September 2000 and he said the bunker was actually in Queens Park not the Sports Reserve. He said it was an underground command centre for the American Army. It would have been located just below where the North Ward Bowls Club is now located on the seaward side of the road. The bunker was surrounded by sand bags. He said the Americans were also established in the Botanical Gardens.

Ray Smith was employed as a Scout (runner) at North Eastern Area Command HQ in Sturt Street during WWII.
