IRONSTONE SEARCHLIGHT STATION

DURING WW2
Darwin was first bombed by the Japanese on the morning of the 19 February 1942. Most of the Searchlight Stations in Darwin were machine-gunned during the first raid. Lance Corporal F. Terone (N103222) assisted by Sapper. Dick Spedding at Ironstone Searchlight Station managed to shoot one Japanese fighter aircraft down with their machine gun. This was the first Japanese aircraft brought down by ground fire over Australian soil during WW2.
