DEERAGUN GASOLINE DUMP (US
ARMY)
DEERAGUN, TOWNSVILLE, QLD
IN AUSTRALIA DURING WWII
![]()
The US Army established a large Gasoline Fuel Dump at Derragun past the Bohle River in Townsville during WWII. This was where the stored large quantities of Aviation Fuel in steel drums. The Woodlands Shopping Centre now covers the front part of the Deeragun Gasoline Dump. Nightjar railway siding was located nearby.
Arthur Tompkins worked for the Americans at the Deeragun Gasoline Dump at the Bohle during WWII. After the war Arthur became a Sales Representative for Hollis Hopkins. Arthur's daughter, Leisha Schell, told me that the American Camp was located at "the Bohle around the back of the shops, Coles. The petrol drums were keep there. My dad was 15, the Americans came to his mum (my grandma) and said 'hay can that little Aussie boy come and work for us'. My dad used to serve on them (food). I have my dad's plates."
