AUSTRALIAN LANDING CRAFT ASSEMBLY DEPOT

DURING WW2

An Australian Landing Craft Assembly Depot was established at the end of Brownlee Street, at Boggy Creek at Pinkenba on the banks of the Brisbane River during WW2. It was located just upstream from RAN Station 9 Pinkenba (Indicator Loop Station and Photo-electric Beam).

From 1942, the steel sections for the 32 feet, ALC5 (38 feet) and ALC15 (44 feet) Australian Landing Craft, for the Australian Army were manufactured at the Ford Motor Works at Eagle Farm. The 32 feet and 38 feet Australian Landing Craft were manufactured in four sections. Each steel hull and side plate sections were dipped in sulphuric acid then washed in phosphoric acid baths. They were then coated with zinc chromate. The components were then transported to the Australian Landing Craft Assembly Depot at Pinkenba where they were assembled and launched into the Brisbane river. The dredged launching area in the Brisbane River can still be quite clearly seen in Google Earth.
