HAWKINGE FIGHTER STATION

The Battle of Britain Museum is located at Hawkinge on the A260 between Folkestone and Canterbury.

It is situated on the edge of a corn field which was once the famous Hawkinge Battle of Britain fighter station. The museum was originally housed at Chilham Castle.

The museum consist of huts full of WWII aircraft memorabilia including reconstructed planes, parts and engines dug up from the surrounding countyside together with personal items belonging to pilots that flew in the Battle of Britain which have been donated by their families.

There is a quilt made by some local ladies as a replica of the cover of a book, "A Harvest of Messerschmitts", written by Dennis Knight and based on the 1940 diaries of Miss. Mary K. Smith of Elham, who was an English teacher. A 'must' read for anyone interested in the Battle of Britain and the Elham Valley specifically. The Battle of Britain Museum is open from 1st May to mid October, 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Yes I have access to a copy of this book - I have been trying to buy a copy for some time but have had no success.

I have discovered that the book is out of print but have tried to contact the Publisher - so far no luck.

I will be visiting Hawkinge on the 16 August and had hoped that there might be some copies on sale but obviously not.

I have now tracked down a copy of Harvest of Messerschmidts and am waiting delivery.

I thought you might be interested in the web address of the shop which is in Horsham, West Sussex. Apparently he is also interested in aspects of WW2 and is able to locate quite a number of books which are now out of print.

I have tried to cc this to Toney but last time I tried the system did not like the mail address
