CHALLENGER BATTERY
ALSO KNOWN AS "J" BATTERY
GARDEN ISLAND, WA
DURING WWII
Initially called Garden Battery, then Entrance Battery and finally it was called Challenger Battery by the time the site was made operational by "J" Heavy Battery on the northern tip of Garden Island. It comprised two 155mm US Mobile guns on Panama mounts to protect Garden Island whilst more permanent gun batteries were being constructed.
