22 JULY 1942
CRASH OF A B-26 MARAUDER
AT
7 MILE FIELD, PORT MORESBY

A B-26 Marauder, aircraft #40-1518, "Cossack", of 408th Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group, landed with its nose wheel up at 7 Mile Field, Port Moresby on 22 July 1942.  The pilot of this aircraft was Captain Ralph L. Michaelis. He was returning from the second attack of the day on a Japanese convoy off Buna. His nose wheel mechanism had been damaged by shrapnel. The aircraft came to rest in a drainage ditch.

NOTE:- Another Reference suggests that this happened at Charters Towers.
